Night Diver Specialty

The idea of diving below the surface at night seems mysterious, even seductive. Even if you have dived a site many times before, at night you enter a whole new world and watch it come to life under the beam of your dive light. The scene changes as daytime creatures retreat and nocturnal organisms emerge. If you’ve ever wondered what happens when the sun goes down, sign up for a PADI Night Diver Specialty course.

PADI (Junior) Open Water Divers or higher who are at least 12 years of age may enroll in a Night Diver specialty course.

Academic

Diving at night teaches you to focus on what you can see under the beam of your light, control your buoyancy by touch, stay with your buddy and pay attention to details you may overlook during the day. During three night dives, you will practice:

• Handling techniques and communications with the flashlight.
• Enter, exit and navigate in the dark.
• Identify how plants and animals differ or change their behavior at night.
• You can earn academic credit for the Night Diver course – ask your instructor.
• In addition, the first dive of this PADI Specialty Diver course can serve as an Adventure Dive credit toward your Advanced Open Water Diver certification – ask your instructor about getting credit.

Team

Along with your basic scuba gear, you will need a primary dive light and you will also want to have a backup light. Your PADI Instructor or local dive center staff may suggest other equipment options, such as bringing more protection to the exposure to be more comfortable after dark.
