Santo Domingo (officially called Santo Domingo de Guzmán) is the capital of the Dominican Republic. The city is located over the Caribbean sea, at the outfall of the Ozama river, at 155km of the southeast of Santiago de los Caballeros. Founded by Bartolomé Colon in 1496 at the oriental margin of the Ozama river and then moved by Nicolas de Ovando in 1502 to the occidental margin of the same river. It is known for being the place of the first European settlement in America and for being the Spanish colonial government headquarters in the Nuevo Mundo. It is located at the limit of the Distrito Nacional and this last one is bordered by three parts of the Santo Domingo district. Its south borders the Caribbean sea, its east with east side of Santo Domingo, its west with west side of Santo Domingo and its north with north side of Santo Domingo and between them all become Gran Santo Domingo.
At Santo Domingo you can find the first cathedral and the first castle of America; both of them located at the Ciudad Colonual. Diego de Colón house, Osama fortress and Conde and Damas Street, all this area was declared as Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
